The Power of Listening and Being Listened to

Life offers challenges, and sometimes they feel too heavy to carry, especially if we try to carry them alone. Whether it is battling addiction, grief, trying to be brave as a caretaker to someone we love, or trying to mask burnout, being abused, or the emptiness inside us. In this video, you’ll meet people with different challenges who found a common way of support - Peer support groups. You will hear how they utilized the power of listening to others and being listened to in the safe space of a peer support group. You will hear their lived experiences alongside the insights from Mette Smedstad, Senior Advisor at Selvhjelp Norge. Learn the different layers a peer support group offers, how these different people have utilized it differently, and how they have combined it with other aspects of their journey.

We all face emotions and situations where we just want to escape and not feel. At least for a while, we can recharge before we return to our lives and try to cope. This is where addiction can get a hold of us, and for many it creeps up on us. Learn from people that have broken out of different types of addiction, and hear insights from Consultant Clinical Psychologist Anne Crawford-Docherty. Together they take you through the different aspects of addiction, sharing experiences from their own lives when their addiction controlled them. Hear why many of us use different substances to escape our emotions or challenges in life through their real experiences. See what moments made them re-evaluate if the positives of their escape outweighed the costs of their addiction. Anne shares the model called “the stages of change”, and the different people share how they managed to break out of their addiction, to create the new lives they wanted. Hear what they learned from the whole process and what they wish they knew when they still felt the need to escape life. This is a good introduction that can help you take steps to overcome your addiction or how to support another person on their recovery journey.
